This unusual, contemporary two-volume set describes the famous trial of Queen Caroline, wife of George IV, on a charge of adultery. It is taken verbatim from the journals of the House of Lords, where the trial was held, and includes a number of engravings of the main protagonists. Much that was reprehensible was proved in the trial; but, partly due to the effective defence of Lord Brougham (q.v. a27), there was a popular move in Caroline's favour and the case was abandoned. She was forcibly excluded from her husband's coronation in 1821 and died a few days later.. Worn condition. Covers heavily rubbed. Edge-wear. Outer hinges split, with front board of volume II nearly loose. Distortion to spine of volume I. Inner hinge cracking. Foxing. Sporadic staining and browning, impinging on content. Loss to corners of pages 423-432 in volume I. Missing plates 'J Park, Esq' and 'The Lord High Chancellor' in volumes I & II respectively .
