Description: Printed for the author by N Nickson in Coffee-Yard, York, 1758. First Edition, Hardcover. Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Dedication to Lord Willoughby of Parham, Richard Frank and the Members of the Antiquarian Society. Full contemporary calf-leather with blind decoration, both joints are cracked and covers are attached by cords, wear at spine-ends and scuffed corners. Two free front end-papers both of which are detached. Plates and handwritten details of previous owners at the front. Text block binding is sound. Pages are clean. Instructions to binders give locations for 7 engravings. This copy contains the three fold out maps/plans but does not contain the other four engravings - there is no evidence of their removal. Included are: The Inclosures & Plan of the Abbey of Fountains of the Cistercian Order in the West Riding of the County of York (partial split on one fold) (facing page 140); The Plan of the Abbey of St. Mary at Kirkstall near Leeds in the West Riding of Yorkshire (facing page 286); A Map of the Parish of Hemingbrough and its Boundaries taken by an accurate survey. Volume One of a projected 2 volume history which was never completed owing to the death of the author in 1771. Full title; Monasticon Eboracense: and the Ecclesiastical History of Yorkshire containing an Account of the first Introduction of Christianity in that Diocese, until the End of William the Conqueror's Reign. Also The Description of the Situation, Fabric, Times of Endowments of all Churches, Collegiate, Conventual, Parochial, of of peculiar Jurisdiction; and of other Religious Places in that District, and to whose Memory they were dedicated. Together with An Account of Such Monuments and Inscriptions as are worthy of Notice, as well as of the Rise, Progress, Establishment, Privileges, and the Suppression of each Order, Religious of Military, fixed therein. With the Catalogues of al the Abbots, and other Superiors of thise Places, and of all the Patrons, Rectors, Vicars, Cantarists etc of each Church, Chapel etc from the earliest Account, down to the present Time. Collected from the best Historians and antient Manuscripts in the Bodleyan, Cottonian and other Libraries in London, Oxford and Cambridge, and several Cathedrals; as also from other Public Records, Registers etc. etc. To which is added A Scheme an Proposals to form a Society for compiling a complete Civil and Natural History of the Antient and Present State of Yorkshire etc. To tis is subjoined a short Historical Account of the Parish of Hemingbrough, as a Specimen; shewing what Materials the Author has collected towards such a Society, according to the above proposals xii, 448, [35].
