Title: Photographic Reproduction of Speech to Congress by President Theodore Roosevelt; Message of the President of the United States Communicated to the Two Houses of Congress: Concerning the Employers' Liability Act, and Antitrust Laws
Description: (Washington DC), T. K. Webster, 1909. First & only edition. Hardcover. Folio; pp; 28 leaves printed on rectos only; Typescript message with corrections in manuscript, accompanied by a holograph note dated March 2, 1909, from Theodore Roosevelt to Henry Beach Needham. pebbled terra-cotta cloth lettered in gilt. Photocopy of corrected typescript and holograph: "Photographed from the original by T.K. Webster. Dec. 1911. Presented to his friend John S. Metcalf." This speech was in response to the SCOTUS overturning the "Employers Liability Act", See Morris', Theodore Rex, pp 505-508. It appears that TR gifted? the original amended typescript to Henry Beech Needham and it is this that Mr. T. K. Webster has reproduced. We strained to find a copy in the Harvard Collection but failed. We could locate just a single copy which conforms to this with the exception of the gift recipient. That copy is at the Murray Green Library at Roosevelt University, Chicago, and the recipient of that copy is Jane Addams. TR's extensive changes, additions, deletions and marginal notes provide the insight to his thought processes regarding this issue. It is a truly Progressive speech admonishing the Court and insisting that the Nation has the responsibility and moral duty to protect the worker against loss from injury during employment in either the private or the public sector. cloth lightly faded else very good.
