First edition, very rare, complete with the folding map. The author (1722-1790) was a Catalán Jesuit who traveled to the Americas where he studied the culture and languages of various Indian tribes. In Santa Marta he explored the gold and silver mines and the culture of pearls. In this work he treats the life and culture of the native inhabitants, demonstrating his favoritism of the Spanish. The second part is devoted to the Indian groups, with a chapter dealing with the Guajiro language. Curiously, the author considers that cocaine would be very beneficial to the poor because of its energy producing qualities and suppression of the appetite. A UNIQUE COPY, having belonged to the extraordinary library of the Mexican collector and historian Lucas Alamán, with his personal ex-libris.
