Horacio Silvestre Quiroga Forteza (Salto, Uruguay, December 31, 1878-Buenos Aires, Argentina, February 19, 1937) was a notable Uruguayan short story writer, dramatist, and poet. He was the master of the Latin American short story, of vivid, naturalist, and modernist prose. His short stories that frequently picture nature as the enemy of human beings with fearful and horrible terms, caused him to be compared with the United States author Edgar Allan Poe. The life of Quiroga, marked by tragedy, hunting accidents and suicides, ended by his own decision by drinking a glass of cyanide in a Buenos Aires hospital at 58 years of age. With Los arrecifes de coral he began his literary career, prior to moving to Argentina, where he remained the rest of his life.
