Buenos Aires, 1870. Half leather. 8vo 347+428 pp ills Good. ¶ A VERY FINE COPY OF THIS CLASSIC WORK THAT CHANGED THE IMAGE OF THE INDIAN. FIRST EDITION. In 1870, Mansilla published his text for the first time in the newspaper La Tribuna, in the form of serial pamphlets, as was common at the time, just as Facundo and Amalia appeared. He made some notable contributions to Argentine literature. Over all, he brought to literary representation a new image of the Indian, that poetry and fiction tended to picture as a ferocious being, practically excluded from humanity. Without idealizing hi, Mansilla presented the Ranquel as bretheren, in full possession of their humanity, and a the producer of a culture that could teach valuable lessons. In second place, he also changed the image of the gaucho, “the barbarian of the revolutionaries”, that he presented as gifted with noble qualities and susceptible to direct incorporation to the civilizing process. Mansilla also criticized the conventional errors and rhetoric that poets and men of science of their time used to poorly describe, following squared and common ideas, the pampa, that was not one but many, and whose varied riches very few knew as he did from first hand. PRIMERA EDICIÓN. En 1870, Mansilla publicó por primera vez su texto en el diario La Tribuna, en forma de folletín por entregas, según era común en la época, tal como aparecieron Facundo y Amalia. Hizo algunos aportes notables a la literatura argentina. Ante todo, trajo a la representación literaria una nueva imagen del indio, que la poesía y la ficción solían dibujar como un ser feroz, prácticamente excluido de la condición humana. Sin idealizarlo, Mansilla presentó al ranquel como un prójimo, en cabal posesión de su humanidad, y como productor de una cultura que podía enseñar lecciones valiosas. En segundo término, cambió también la imagen del gaucho, el 'bárbaro de la montonera', al que presentó dotado de nobles cualidades y susceptible de una paulatina incorporación al proceso civilizatorio. También criticó Mansilla las inexactitudes convencionales y retóricas en que cayeron poetas y hombres de ciencia de su tiempo al describir pobremente, siguiendo cartabones y lugares comunes, a la pampa, que no era una sino múltiple, y cuya variada riqueza muy pocos conocían, como él, de primera mano.
