ANONYMOUS (KELLEY, MIKE) & DIEDRICH DIEDRICHSEN WHY I GOT INTO ART (VASELINE MUSES) BY ANONYMOUS - (MIKE KELLEY)Koln, GERMANY, Galerie Jablonka & Verlag Der Buchhandlung Walther Konig., 1991, First Edition 1/1000. (ISBN: 3-88375-151-0) Gilt Embossed Wrappers, 8vo, np (184pp), 22 b&w illustrations. Text in English and German. Designed by Patti Podesta. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. This is noted Los Angeles based artist Mike Kelley's very first artist book from 1991, the supremely quirky "Why I Got into Art (Vaseline Muses)". Credited only to "Anonymous", it seems the reason Mr. Kelley got into art had very much to do with the plethora of naked female performance artists of the sixties and seventies. Instead of winsome David Hamilton girls-on-the-verge-of-womanhood basking in a muted color boudoir, the viewer instead gets twenty-two Vaseline-fogged yet gritty re-photographed black and white images of the likes of Yoko Ono, Hannah Wilke, Lynda Benglis, Carolee Schneeman, Cheri Gaulke, Valie Export and Veruschka. Limited to one thousand copies only, the book's unique design presents the parallel English and German texts back-to-back and upside down to one another, with the reproductions for the English half rendered as black monochromes. A most presentable copy of this uncommon item showing some scrapes to the faux-leather, gilt-embossed bible-like covers.. Very Good -.
