Mount Desert: An Informal History . The Town of Mount Desert, 1989.. First edition.Hard Cover. Mount Desert Island, in Hancock County, Maine, is the largest island off the coast of Maine. With an area of 108 square miles (280 kmē) it is the 6th largest island in the continental United States.[1]. Though it is often claimed to be the third largest island on the eastern seaboard of the United States,[2] it is actually second behind only Long Island (and ahead of Martha's Vineyard).[citation needed]Some natives stress the second syllable (de-ZERT), in the French fashion, although many others pronounce it in a fashion similar to the English name of a landscape devoid of vegetation (DEH-zert). French explorer Champlain's observation that the summits of the island's mountains were free of vegetation as seen from the sea led him to call the island "Isles des Monts Desert", or Island of the bare mountains. It has a permanent population of about 10,000 although it is estimated that two and a half million tourists a year visit the Acadia National Park on the island. The island is home to numerous well-known summer colonies such as Northeast Harbor, Maine (Village), and Bar Harbor. Current residents include David Rockefeller., 1st Edition (1989) - CLEAN in text.
