HOBBES, JOHN OLIVER, PSEUD. PEARL MARY TERESA CRAIGIE The Dream and the Business
New York: D. Appleton & Co, 1906. First American Edition. Hardcover. Covers slightly worn, backstrip slightly sunned, else VG. Bright, solid, clean; Light lavender cloth covers, with beige-ivory lettering, floral design borders in dark lavender; 8vo; 385 pages; By an author born in the U. S. Who lived her adult life in England, as is noted in a prefatory "Appreciation" by Joseph H. Choate. She died shortly after this was going to Press, too, as is noted, there. Aubrey Beardsley designed an attention-getting cover, on yellow cloth, for the Unwin, English edition, of 1906, but this is a more subdued cover design, signed by "B. S. " --apparently by Bertha Stewart, although perhaps by Frank Berkeley Smith. Contemporary newspaper review of this novel tipped in, at the rear; the reviewer sees the "morbid decadent" style of the Beardsley cover illustration as one the reflects the style of this "novel of modern English life, " also.
