Paris, veuve d'Houry, 1748, in-4to, 2 ff. + XXIV + 884 p. + 25 planches de au total 400 figures gravées (16 fig. par planche, la dernière pl. concerne la rège animale), çà et là qq peu bruni ou qqs rousseurs, manque la feuille de garde devant, reliure en veau à nerfs, pièce de titre au dos, riche dorure au dos partiel. passée, cuir frotté et gratté, et qq peu taché, accrocs aux coiffes surtout en bas, coins écrasés et dénudés, reliure un peu fragile (début de fente au milieu du volume), tranches rouges ¶ Important medical-botanical work, illustrated with 25 plates of which 24 with medical plants and one with animals. Each plate shows 16 engraved images. 'Pirated reprint of 1733 ed. ... Includes 'Eloge de M. Lemery' by B. le Bovier de fontenelle, repr. from 'Hist. Acad. Sci.', 1715' (Wellcome). Some stains, text with light browning, without first fly-leaf, full cont. calf binding, bottem spine with some obstructions, corners a bit used, in all a fine copy. 'As the title indicates, this work is complementary to the author's Pharmacopoeia, an important pharmacological work of the early 18th century; it is largely devoted to medical plants. ... Lémery was one of the most interesting men of his time. He condemned the alchemistic mysteries which still cluttered chemistry up, and was largely responsible for the love of chemical experiment which was so distinctive a character of the 18th century.'
