Ill.: Harry Furniss. - in a variant and unrecorded binding not noted by Crutch - red cloth and spine as noted but without the cover illustrations stamped in gilt - imprinted on the upper cover in blind " Presented for the use of Mechanics' Institutes . Reading Rooms etc. " - all edges plain, not gilt - the cover portraits of Sylvie & Bruno are not edged in gilt - white ( not black ) ep's - Crutch # 280 notes some copies were " given away in 1896 " [ two years before the 1898 Peoples Edition ] - cloth worn at the spine tips, 1/4 hole punched at mid-spine - just a good sound used copy in a rare unrecorded binding, no evidence that this was ever in a school or Mechanic's Institute library . Good.
