Jeremiah Curtin (1835 -1906) was one of the greatest linguists of the 19th century doing important work with the Indians of California and Oregon and in Indian Territory, and among the Senecas. He also traveled extensively in Mexico and Guatemala, and in Russia where he translated Russian literature into English. A fascinating autobiography of a pioneering scholar who deserves to be better known today.
