Higginson (1823-1911) was a noted American abolitionist who served as Colonel in the first Black regiment in the Civil War and wrote the classic account _Army Life in a Black Regiment_. He was the mentor of poet Emily Dickinson, corresponding with her for 25 years and was instrumental in publishing her first book of poems.
