Three original photographs - portraits of Navajo men by William Pennington. Durango, Colorado, ca. 1910s-1920s.
Titled on versos in pencil: 1. "A Noted Medicine Man." Illustrated in CLARK, p. 195 and identified as "Hosteen Badugai, Mr. Mustache of Hosclishni Clan.... He worked for many years at Hogback Trading Company for Wilford Wheeler." Half-length portrait of bare-chested elder with blanket around shoulders, squash blossom necklace and cloth headband. 2. "A Navajo Gentleman." CLARK, p. 184: identified as Hosteen Joe, Sanostee, Arizona. Half-length pensive portrait from side. 3. "Half breed Navajo Chief." Bust portrait, of Navajo man wrapped in blanket, large silver and turquoise bracelet on wrist, cloth headband. Not in CLARK. All sepia silver prints, 10 x 8 inches, unmounted. All fine condition. Pennington (1890-1940) was in the Edward Curtis and Karl Moon tradition of romantic depictions of Southwest Indians.Or $400.00 each. The three
