He wrote two books: an autobiography and a history of the Ojibwa. Here he presents his plan to create a large collective tribal nation in the Northwest. About Copway's plan Gerald Vizenor has written: "He was ahead of his time in understanding land problems and cultural conflicts, but he had no political constituencies to embrace his ideas.
