Description: Paris, 1894-1895. 52 issues as published, bound together in 20th century h.calf (corners worn).The first year of the periodical Le Rire (meaning to laugh), The most successful humoristic journal published in France during the Belle Epoque. Founded by Felix Juven in 1894, it was published weekly as an illustrated satirical (later it became a monthly publication). The illustrations were designed by the great artists that flourished at the time. The most important contributer was Toulouse-Lautrec, who made designs for the first three years of the publication. For this volume seven of his designs were used: two full-page col. plates (Yvette Guilbert & 'Polaire), one full-page b./w. plate (Miss May Milton) and four b./w text-ills. Other artists who contributed to this volume are a.o. H.Daumier, F. Valleton, A.. Willette and C.Léandre. - Four pages with a stain; unfortunately, issue no. 37 is incomplete. Only the cover is present.
