Title: The Helmut N. Friedlander Library, Part I (Ny, April 23, 2001)
Description: NY: Christie's, 2001. First Printing. Hard Cover. Publisher's full gray linen cloth, gilt lettering on cover and spine. Profusely illustrated entirely in color. This is the catalog for Christie's Sale No. 9630, held in New York on April 23, 2001. 185 Lots. "Helmut Friedlaender's wonderful incunabula - his library's forte - and to a lesser extent the selective group of medieval manuscripts, the milestones of science and literature of later centuries, demonstrate what could still be done in traditional collecting at a time when it seemed to some cognoscenti that choice might be running out. If desire was strong enough, means and energy sufficiently available - and Mr Friedlaender had all of these - rare books were to be found. In fact, he showed two other qualities essential to any collector: persistence and patience." Among the highlights mentioned were such items as: the Pforzheimer vellum copy of the 1465 Mainz Cicero (lot 39); the fabulous Auersperg copy on vellum of Theuerdank (lot 172); the Buxheim Monastery set of the Koberger edition of Antoninus Florentinus' Chronicon remarried after a century with its original flyleaf bearing the woodcut bookplate of Hilprand Brandenburg (lot 15); a Bohemian illuminated manuscript of Gregory I's Moralia (lot 4); Heine's Romanzero inscribed to Baroness James de Rothschild (lot 160), the first edition of Pushkin's first collection of poems (lot 174), and almost complete collections of first editions of Kafka (lots 364-378) and Gunter Grass (lot 313), mostly acquired from or through Quaritch,; and other works in science and philosophy, law and Judaica. Lots 186-234 comprise "a highly unusual and carefully formed collection of documents dating from the 12th to the 20th centuries which bear seal impressions in wax. Seals of this type were affixed to a wide range of documents in order to certify the authority and validity of the contents, whether an indenture, appointment, proclamation or legal agreement." - Catalog..
