Very scarce.; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 82 pages; "In 1839 James Dundas Douglas, a Captain with the 53rd Regiment Native Infantry, marched south from Ferozepore on India's NW frontier to join the gathering forces of the British led Army of the Indus at Quetta. The plan was to invade Afghanistan, place the British puppet Shah Shujah on the throne in Cabool (Kabul) and thus secure India's frontier against Persian and Russian invasion. Douglas's letters describe the near-disastrous journey into Afghanistan over the Bolan Pass, the conditions in Kandahar, dramatic seizure of the fort at Ghiznee (Ghazni) and political intrigue in Cabool and Jalalabad. Douglas was killed in battle near Jalalabad on Feb. 25 1841 at the age of 41." The letters to his brother Charles and his father General Sir Howard Douglas were found in an English attic in the 1990s.. Very Good+ in Very Good dust jacket .
