CANNIFF, WILLIAM,  THE MEDICAL PROFESSION IN UPPER CANADA 1783-1850. An Historical Narrative, with Original Documents Relating to the Profession, Including Some Brief Biographies.
Toronto, William Briggs, 1894. First Edition, 8VO, pp. [2], xii, (9)-688, [2] Bright gilt on front cover, faded on spine. White call letters on spine which is worn at extremities. Various labels, markings and stamps on first few pages, no pocket. Several clippings related to the book’s subject matter are glued in. Hinges are cracked but overall this a very attractive and generally lightly worn copy of the first edition of a rather scarce book. VG Â
   ¶ Canniff, a prominent Canadian physician was a man of many parts. He served in the Crimea and briefly in the Union Army, wrote the first Canadian medical textbook, was instrumental in the founding of the Canadian Medical Association, serving as its president, was Toronto’s first Medical Health Officer and wrote the first medical history, this book. This is a very clean non-circulating ex-library copy in the original cloth. Contains 300 biographies of Ontario doctors, illustrated with black and white plates, it is an essential reference for Canadian medical history
