Third Edition of Darwin's work on coral reefs. With numerous illustrations and folding plates showing the distribution of the different kind of coral reefs (with colour). After Darwin's first edition of this book, in 1842, Professor Dana published his work on Corals and Coral-Reefs in which he criticised Darwin for not putting sufficient weight on the mean temperature of the sea and in determining the distribution of coral-reefs, and on his view of the effect of volcanic action. Darwin's answer to the criticism is published in this edition, which is further updated by an appendix by Prof. Bonney. In original three-quarter red leather, gilt lettering, with a small tear at the top of the spine (no damage to title), and marbled boards. A clean, tight copy. Very Good.
