ART. For nearly four hundred years the Gothic style dominated the architecture of West Europe, but it was in the service of the Church that it attained its most complete and most meaningful expression. Originating in the twelfth century in the Ile-de-France, Gothic architecture rapidly reached its full expression in an ever-increasing emphasis upon height and spaciousness, upon light and texture, and upon the integration of the physical needs of the church with its iconographical and symbolical program. No other country assimilated the Gothic and produced a national design so readily as England. It was not until the middle of the thirteenth century that architects in Germany produced a design that was to become perhaps the clearest expression of a national style - the hall-church. ; 10-1/4" Tall; 125 pages. What he is impressing on his students is the spirit at the back of it...Mr. Brooks wisely selects the Coloseum and the Pantheon as typical examples. "A delightful book which makes clear how important the environment - the buildinGs, houses, grounds, gardens, streets, and open spaces in and among which we live - is for our well-being. It is a book which taken seriously would prevent the kind of 'redevelopment' that turns into traumatic displacement, and the erection of buildings that resemble factories on college campuses. It might also lead to the construction of environments fit for human beings to live in....In his...magnificently and intelligently illustrated book, Barrie Greenbie demonstrates that the human qualities of the environment in which we live depend less on the architectural splendor of the buildings than on the skill with which they are articulated within the outdoor space.
