Catalogue of the Public High School, Brookline, Mass., 1843-4
Boston, John Putnam, Printer. 1844, First Edition. Soft Cover. This is a rare surviving pamphlet from the first year of operation of the Brookline Public High School, the school year 1843-44. It is actually an advertising piece published for prospective students and their parents similar to the modern college catalogue. It is 12 pages with a paper cover and a string-stitched binding. It lists names of the School Committee (3), the faculty (2), the students of that first school year (96, with 49 males and 47 females), the entire 4-year curicculum of courses, plus an explanation of rules for such things as punctuality, study hours, recitation, vacations, and library. The last 2 pages are a history of the school which state that it only went into operation in May of 1843, making this the catalogue of the very first full school year. It is in remarkable good condition, although there is a light pervasive water stain throughout. This is a great collectible piece in the history of education of Brookline, Mass. VG-.
