ALVAR NUÑEZ CABEZA DE VACA  A New Critical Edition of His Account of the Panfilo de Narvaez Expeditions (1527 - 1536)
X. TOGETHER WITH A FACSIMILE REPRODUCTION OF CODEX VINDOBONENSIS 5620 THE EARLIEST SURVIVING MANUSCRIPT OF ALVAR NUÑEZ CABEZA DE VACA'S RELACION. 2 volumes Historia en español de las Indias del Nuovo Mon do (Naufragios). Codex Vindobonensis 5620, Österreichische Nationale Bibliothek, Vienna. Transcription, introduction y notas por Miguel Nieto Nuño. 1996. 31cm . (Vol 1 = critical edition of the text: xxii, 129p. double page colour map [drawn by Angela Roncero]; vol. II = facsimile reproduction of Codex Vindobonensis 5620: title leaf + 58 numbered leaves), gilt and blind stamped suede (Cover desi gned by Angela Roncero). Limited Edition: 750 numbered copies. TWO VOLUME SET. A new critical edition with Introduction, notes and variant readings by Miguel Nieto Nuñ of Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca's account of the Pánfilo de Naváez expedition (1527-1536) which went through a substantial part of Florida and an extensive territory of what is today the southwestern United States. The text of this mo st recent edition of the so-called "naufragios" is based on a transcription of an hitherto unknown manuscript that is preserved in the Vienna Statsbibliothek (Codex Vindobonensis 5620); indeed, as Nie to Nuño points out, even such an authority on Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca as Enrique Pupo-Walker seems to have been unaware of the existence of Codex Vindobonensis 5620. In his introduction Nieto Nuño gives a detailed account of the Vienna manuscript and describes also some other known manuscript version of the text of the "naufraggois". According to Nieto Nuño, Codex Vindobonensis 5620 must be dat ed before 1542, the date of the first printed edition of the text published at Zamora, and is therefore at present the oldest extant version of the narrative of the Pánfilo de Narváez expedition. Alth ough both the text of Codex Vindobonensis 5620 and that of the Zamora 1542 edition seeem to be closely related, Nieto Nuño has pointed out that based on the variant readings it is quite clear that the se two texts were not directly dependent on each other. From a comparison of Codex Vindobonensis 5620 with the printed version of the 1542 edition Nieto Nuño comes to the conclusion that even at such an early stage of its transmission the stemma of Alvar Núñez Cabezade Vasca's account shows already at least two branches that must have grown out of a hypothetical original version of the text. The v ariant readings in Nieto Nuño's new edition occur at the end of each chapter. They are the result of a meticulous comparison of Codex Vindobonensis 5620 with the text of the editions published in Zamo ra (1542) and in Valladolid (1555), the two earliest printed editions of the "naufragois". Worthy of note as a distinctive feature between all these texts is the heading of MS 5620: Historia de las Indias del Nuovo Mondo, that appears to be uniquqe in the textual transmission of the "Naufragois". In view of the importance of Codex Vindobonensis 5620 as the earliest known version of Alvar Núñez Ca beza de Vaca's text, a facsimile reproduction of the complete Vienna manuscript makes up the companion volume of this luxurious new critical edition of the narrative of the Pánfilo de Narváez expediti on. The new version of the "Naufragios" edition by Miguel Nieto Nuño, with added bonus of the publication in facsimile of Codex Vindobonensis 5620, must become, on account of its many virtues, an esse ntial point of departure for any scholarly study devoted to a textual transmission of Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca's text.[pub10 Sandq Spain Spanish travel latin America South America ].
