Keiko Fukuda (born April 12, 1913) is the highest-ranking female practitioner of judo in the world. She was born in Tokyo, and began the practice of judo in 1935 at the age of 21. She was invited to study judo by Kano Jigoro, the founder of the martial art, because of his relationship with her grandfather, Fukuda Hachinosuke, who had taught Tenjin Shiny?-ry? Jujutsu to Kano a number of years prior. Fukuda is the last living pupil of Dr Kano. In 1973, Fukuda published Born for the Mat, an instructional book intended for women about the kata of kodokan judo. Fukuda currently holds a 9th degree black belt (9th dan) in judo. She was awarded a rare red belt in judo by the United States Judo Federation in 2001 for her lifelong contribution to the martial art[1]. In January 2006, at its annual Kagami Biraki New Years celebration, the Kodokan Judo Institute also awarded her the 9th degree black belt (9th dan). She is the only woman to ever hold this high a rank from any recognized judo organization. She teaches at the Soko Joshi Judo Club in the Noe valley district of San Francisco, California. Crepe paper book tied with silk threads.A fine to very good copy in fine pastel colours .This is one in a series of 20 such books . They are not dated. The approximate date is determined by the address listed by Hasegawa (see chart at bottom of the page). The books are classic Japanese fairy tales. While no credit is given the translator, it is know that several individuals translated for the series. Since these books were intended for markets outside of Japan, Hasegawa employed numerous prominent foreigners for this task. Many famous Westerners living in Meiji Japan were associated with Hasegawa's work. Occasionally, Hasegawa would be commissioned by others to produce their work. Risuke Otake (born March 10, 1926) is a Japanese martial artist. Known by the title Take Risuke Minamoto no Takeyuki he is the incumbent (as of 2008) shihan (Teaching Master) of Tenshin Shoden Katori Shint ry bujutsu, which he learned as a disciple of the previous teaching master Hayashi Yazaemon (1892 1964) from the time he entered the school at the age of 16, in 1942. In 1967, when Otake sensei was 42 years old, he received gokui kaiden, the highest level of attainment in the tradition, and at the same time became the school's teaching master. He lives and teaches in rural location near Narita city, in Chiba Prefecture of Japan. He is a member of the Chiba Prefecture Board of Registrars and Appraisers for Muskets and Swords; a position he has held since 1979.
