An outstanding copy of this book in Very Good condition, a book without any repairs or touch-ups. The gilded page edges and inside are very Fine, show very little browning, the first few pages with little foxing. While the front hinge shows a small break (about 1.5"), it is still a solid copy. The bright leather cover is beautifully gold accented with decorative edges throughout. A superbly maintained copy of this fundamental piece of literature; First leather-bound illustrated edition in one volume [BAL 19525], original designs by Billings, engraved by Baker and Smith. Hammatt Billings (1818-1874) , the artist who had drawn the seven pictures in the two volume edition of Uncle Tom's Cabin, was hired to draw 117 new pictures -- 45 for the head of each chapter, 45 for the end of each chapter, 27 inside various chapters -- as well as ornamental capitals for the first word of each chapter.
