Humour, VI, 7-248 pages, further two pages following (including rear paste-down) advertisement for "The Little Grey Books". Red coloured boards with black titles to the front panel and backstrip. On the rear panel is and advertisement for ' Fry's Cocoa & Chocolate '. Heavy bumping, rubbing and browning of the text block edges and book corners. Rubbing, fading, staining and general marking to the book panels. Heavy browning and some foxing to the text block edges. Browning and handling marks to the endpapers and internal text. The hinge has split on the front and rear and underlying webbing is visible and the text block is movable. There is no publication data readily available apart from on the verso of the title page which states "first published in 1889", but at the beginning of the text there are three other works apart from this title attributed to the author (Diary of Pilgrimage, Three Men on the Brummel and Observations of Henry) so this book is not a first edition but is probably published in the late 19th century. Illustrated Children's Book, 540 g.; VIII, 64 pages, last page blank, foreword by editor, list of illustrations. Bright blue coloured endpapers. The text is illustrated with 29 single page colour illustrations and 10 double page colour illustrations or executed by Richard Doyle. Illustrated covers (wraparound), with white background and gold and blue titles to the front panel and backstrip. A little bumping to the book corners and rubbing to the backstrip edges. Some brown marks to the top book edge. Gift inscription to the top right-hand corner of the free front end paper. Illustrated dustwrapper, same illustration as the underlying board, with gold and blue titles to the front panel and backstrip. Rubbing and creasing to the dustwrapper corners. Rubbing to the top act strip edge and a little chipping to the lower backstrip edge. Some yellowing of the white background and a few marks to the laminate. There is a 0.75 " tear to the lower right-hand corner of the rear dustwrapper panel, a previous owner has supported this tear with tape to the verso of the dustwrapper, tape still in situ. Foxing to the extreme top edge of the dustwrapper, noticeable on the verso of the dustwrapper. This book was first published in 1869, and this is a re-print using the original illustrator's drawings. The number line of the book reads a b c d e f g h, and so is a first edition thus.
