Color lithographic frontispiece and Color Lithographic Half-Title Page. 27 other sepia-toned llithographic plates of animals, explorers, natives, battle scenes, etc. 12 1/4 x 9 3/4. Bound in very heavy brown leather with extensive gilt decoration including a vignette of "Kaffres on the March" , palm trees, other decorations and title on the front and back covers. Four raised spine bands with gilt-stamped title and decorations in the compartments. All edges are gilt. Front hinge open at half-title page, a few leafs are disbound but all are present. Some scuffs and edge wear. Rubbed along the hingees. The contents are Very Good. There is light, sporadic foxing in the margins of the Illustrations, but not on the illustrations. Overall an attractive, large book and Very Good. Note. this book weighs 9 lbs. so inquire regarding extra shipping. An extensive history of Africa covering Dutch Settlers, Native tribes, The Caffres War, Shaka and extensive accounts of the various explorers and adventurers including Livingston. Enhanced with the vivid lithographs.

Frontis. with tissue guard, Illustrated, folding map, appendix, index. 8vo Original dark green with gilt figure on front and gilt spine title. Fore and bottom edges untrimmed. This is an ex. lib copy with a book plate on ffep, but no other library markings. There is a chip on spine where label was removed. The original binding has been expertly recased but about 1/8" at head and foot of spine it can be seen. Hinges nicely reinforced with matching tape. Pages are on heavy stock and clean. Overall this is a very nice copy of a somewhat scarce book. Very detailed account of a trip through the Sudan covering slavery, native medicines, flora and fauna, Mohammedism, pilgrimmage to Mecca and much more.
