Textblock is clean and tight except for inked inscription, dated "Aug 1915" to FPDP. Read on for more information about the book and/or author. This is a collection of Harrison's "various essays, letters and appeals on the German Peril which I had made public in anticipation of the great War, and during its continuance," the author said in the NOTE/preface to this book. He estimated that "about half the book -- ha[s] never been made public in any form." Frederic Harrison (1831-1923) "Harrison," according to the Spartacus Schoolnet site, was the son of a prosperous stockbroker and born in London. Educated at Oxford, read law at Lincoln's Inn and in 1858 was called to the Bar. Having read the works of John Ruskin and Thomas Carlyle, he developed radical political views. The ideas of the Christian Socialists were another major influence. In 1859 he became a frequent lecturer at the Working Men's College and began making regular contributions to trade union and radical journals arguing that trade unions represented working-class democracy in action. He argued that trade unions should be given privileged legal status. He proposed labour-friendly changes to the law, including: "(1) Persons combining should not be liable for indictment for conspiracy unless their actions would be criminal if committed by a single person; (2) The common law doctrine of restraint of trade in its application to trade associations should be repealed; (3) That all legislation dealing with specifically with the activities of employers or workmen should be repealed; (4) That all trade unions should receive full and positive protection for their funds and other property," again according to the Spartacus Schoolnet site. These proposals formed the basis of the 1871 Trade Union Act. Harrison wrote many books including: William Cromwell (1888), John Ruskin (1902), Autobiographic Memoirs (1911), and this one. Very Good +/No Jacket.
