| WOOD & CO Mother and Son (?) Edinburgh, Wood & Co - Photographers. 4.5 x 6.5". Circa early 1890s cabinet card showing a young couple, apparently mother and son (he's about 17, she's about 35-years-old). She is standing by his side, with a hand on his shoulder, while he sits with one ankle crossed over the other. Wood & Co succeeded the Low family at the Princess Street, Edinburgh studio, but various members of the Low family, which started in photography at the end of the 1860s, continued in the trade in various other locations until the early 1920s. Photo has several white flecks. Card (gilt edged with rounded corners) is grey, with black studio name and details to bottom front. On the rear is the studio name, address and notation that it is the successor to "Messrs Low". On the rear are also numerous notations apparently indicating stock numbers and prices. Very Good +. Circa mid-1890s cabinet card vignetted portrait of baby boy (gotta be a boy with that unhappy bunny face). He's about 1-year-old and wearing a rather frilly dress and is sitting on the end of an upholstered sofa. Ovinius Davis had studios in Glasgow (1866 to1908) and Edinburgh (1881 to 1928), according to the EdinPhoto website. Silver card has rounded corners with silver-gilt slightly bevelled edges and studio name and address to bottom, marked as a "Sansortype". Rear is blank except for a small pencilled notation at bottom of back, "28588/p" which could be a stock number. Card is immaculate, except for slight soiling to rear of card and one layer of card is separating on right side. Very Good -. She's got as enigmatic a smile as the Mona Lisa and is sat in a studio set-up to look like a wooded glen, on what appears to be a tree stump surrounded by leafy and grassy covering below her booted feet. Photo is more grey and white than black and white. Card is pure white, immaculate with studio name and details and logo in Gilt with gilt beveled edges and rounded corners. Fine. She is looking rather anxious or nervous and is dressed in a top with very wide, ballooned shoulders and with tons of black lace to the bodice and lower arms to the wrists. She is seated next to a table on which is laid a magazine. E R Yerbury was progenitor of a long line of professional photographers which continues to this day. Photo has several white and a couple of brown flecks and a rounded 2-inch white line near left edge. Card (with rounded corners) is grey, with white studio name, details and logo to bottom front and highly decorated rear. It is numbered in pencil to the rear No 43240B. Very Good.
