Ill.: Various. 96pp - This is a scarce copy of Vol VII, No 1 (Dec. 1924) of the little remembered, but rather funny "Gaiety, a Magazine of Humour". It features stories by Samuel Scoville Jr, John Anthony, "Atom" ("atom" is the narrator in a reference to the ancient Greek idea of atoms.), Holloway Horn, E. Arnot Robertson, "Artemas" (the magazine's editor), Wyan Fryer, Nina Roberts, and F. R. Buckley, Artists whose cartoons are to be found in this volume include: Inder Burns, Lunt Roberts, Leslie P. Marcchant, A. E. Batchelor, Frank Whitburn, Peter Fraser, Alfred H. Taylor, H. M. Talintyre, and Edwin Morrow, Covers (very politically incorrect by today's standards, colour cartoon by Inder Burns showing a Father Christmas(?) character, apparently castaway/marooned on a remote tropical island being adoringly fondled by two island beauties) is worn, small amount of both corrners are cut away, with some wrinkling. Rear cover is a colour advert for Bird's Custard. Speaking of adverts, there are some great contemporary ones inside, including one full-page ad for Henwood's Hair Tonic boasting that it "Makes Hair Grow!", another full page ad is for Swan Fountpens, a half-page advert for Sunripe Extra Size Cigarettes "20 for 1/-" and featuring "the Sunripe Twins". and many more. The textblock is relatively clean and tight with quite a few pages having their corners creased. Good/No Jacket.

London, Methuen & Co Ltd. 1938, First Edition. Cloth, 5 x 7.5". Unpaginated but each week (Sunday through Saturday) is contained in a two-page-spread. Although given as a Christmas gift from "Richard" to "DADDY", it wasn't ever used (though obviously read). perhaps because it was given in 1944 (6 years after publication). And it's no less (or more) useful today than when "DADDY" received it 6 years late. However, if you wait till 2011 you can actually use it since that year's calendar is identical to 1938's. Amidst the great cartoons by Fougasse of "PUNCH" magazine, you'll learn such fascinating titbits as: "The Englishman who didn't call Baseball Rounders was born on Feb 17, 1862; The Minister of Transport on April 30, 1938 called forr less appallingly dangerous driving on the roads; in 1885, on June 5, H. M. Queen Victoria was not amused; and the "Come to Britain" Movement spreads to Scotland on June 6, 1091. Covers (pale blue cloth with dark blue titles and Fougasse drawing to front and rear boards and dark blue titles to spine) are a bit edgeworn and slightly soiled and faded to the bottom edge.
