 -   National Registration Act, 1915 - Identification Card
UK, The Local Government Board. Card, 4.5 x 6.5". This was the National Registration Card of Mary Olive Harris of the Tyseley section of Birmingham England in WWI. It's one of the ID card types the current UK government is citing as precedent for the issuance of ID cards now in their "War on Terror". The Local Government Board was established by the Local Government Board Act 1871 with primary responsibility for supervision of local government services. During and following the First World War the board was required to fulfil special functions, and they were discharged both through its existing departments and by newly-formed ones. One of the latter was that it had general responsibility for the system of national registration for wartime purposes introduced by the National Registration Act 1915. A certificate of registration was issued to everyone on the Register setting out their personal details. Although not called an identity card, that in effect is what it was. An amendment to the act in 1918 required the production of a certificate on demand to a police officer or other authorised person. The registration requirement was withdrawn at the end of the First World War. A similar, but more rigorous ID card scheme was in place during WWII. Other than the fold in the centre of the card to enable it to fit in a wallet, the card is immaculate and a rare piece of WWI ephemera. Fine/No Jacket.

ANONYMOUS  The Midlands: 1913 Sports Analysis (Newspaper Cutting) Previewing Aston Villa's Victory Over Sunderland in the FA Cup Final And More
Unidentified Newspaper. 1913, First Edition. Disbound, 15 x 2.5". This is a press cutting of the sports pages of undated (i've determined it's from 1913, shortly before 8 March. The cutting his headlined, "The Midllands. It contains reports of the following football players for Aston Villa: James (Jimmy) Harrop; James (Jimmy) Leach, Thomas (Tommy) Barber, Samuel Samson Whittaker and Alfred Thomas (Tommy) Lyons. For West Bromwich Albion: Jessie Pennington, Bob Pailor, W. H. Jackson, W. C. Jordan, (?) Deacey, Howard Gregory, and Fred Morris. And new signings for Albion: S. Hatton, J. T. Newall, (?) "Reed from Lintz" Pennington's Albion career lasted from 1903-1922 (496 appearances) and was and is considered one of the teams heros and top players. Hero because "West Bromwich-born left-back Pennington earned the nickname 'Peerless Pennington' during his 19 years with West Bromwich Albion," according to an expressandstar dot com article. "In a career," it continues, "which was interrupted by World War I, he made 455 league appearances for the club. He was part of the team promoted from the Second Division in 1911 and captained the team to the league title in 1919/20 . He was capped 25 times for England." But, as the article explains, his hero status comes about as a result of his helping "expose a betting scandal in 1913 when he was approached by Pascoe Bioletti who was offering £5 a player for Albion to try to not win a match against Everton. Pennington tipped off the police and Bioletti was arrested and jailed." This cutting also includes analysis of then recent boxing matches, which it considered too long at 15 rounds. Boxers and matches discussed include: Harry Rosewarne v Albert Wolfendale, Fred Delaney, Tom Smith v Jim Martin, Rosewarne from Wednesbury fought a total of 21 bouts from the 1900s to the 1910s. The clipping has several folds and the clipper's blade got just a tad too close to the right hand edge thus for a couple of inches in length removed the final one or two letters from each line not seriously affecting legibility of the text. Very Good/No Jacket.

"OUR DRAMATIC CRITIC  Pauline Lord's Triumph / Brilliant Acting in "Anna Christie"
London, Unidentified Newspaper (Probably The Times). Disbound, 6.75 x 2.5". Half a loaf and all that. This is a press cutting of just the headline and illustrations and first paragraph of a newspaper's (probably The Times) rave review of Eugene O'Neill's "Anna Christie" starring Pauline Lord. This was the production that opened in April, 1923 at The Strand, London. It followed the triumphant run at the Vaudeville Theatre on Broadway opening in November 1921 with Lord starring in that production as well. The critic notes that this production was eagerly anticipated, if for no other reason than the hope that this would be unlike previous plays transferred from the colonies, which he notes, "frequently offer disappointments". And he says, "for once our expectations were more than realised.". Very Good/No Jacket.
