A 1000-year-old skeleton was discovered in the caves by Balch in 1912, and has also traditionally been linked to the legendary Witch of Wookey Hole, although analysis indicated that they are the remains of a male aged between 25 and 35. Written by Herbert E. Balch, an English archaeologist, naturalist, caver, and geologist who explored the caves of the Mendip Hills and pioneered many techniques used by modern cavers. A very scarce publication, taken from the 'Report of the British Association for the Advancement of Science', 1847. This work consists of four pages of introductory remarks from Edward Sabine, president of the society, and a geophysicist, ornithologist, explorer and soldier in his own right. The majority of this work consists of tables of temperatures for locations across the globe throughout the year, the work of Heinrich Wilhelm Dove, a Prussian physicist and meteorologist. During his career he published more than 300 papers, some of which delved into experimental physics. He also had an important influence over the science of meteorology, and was considered by some to be a pioneer in this field; Dove's primary meteorological focus was in climatology. He also studied the distribution of heat over the surface of the Earth and the effect of climate on the growth of plants. Disbound, as issued. Tear to head of title page.
