| PICASSO, PABLO. Amours de Jupiter et de Semele (Plate 6 Ovid’s ‘Les Metamorphoses’.Book 3)) Paris. Skira. 1931, First Edition. Single Sheet. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Ill.: Picasso. Amours de Jupiter et de Semele (Plate 6 Ovid’s ‘Les Metamorphoses’.Book 3)) (Bloch 104, Cramer 19) An original etching unsigned as published. A portrait of Marie-Therese Walter As stated by Cramer. In very good condition. Cramer states that Skira asked Picasso to illustrate his first published book in 1930, the subject matter was of Picasso’s choosing. Apparently Picasso had a dream of women transforming into fish. It was Pierre Matisse, Matisse’s son who suggested that Picasso should illustrate Ovid’s ‘Les Metamorphoses’. Skira found a French version for Picasso and under underlined appropriate parts, which he thought would illustrate well. Picasso eventually came up with 27 etchings to illustrate the book. Skira also requested smaller etchings as chapter headings. Thirty etchings in total were produced for the book. Therefore, each book/chapter has a full page etching and a half page etching. Picasso had just moved in with his new mistress, Marie-Therese Walter. Marie-Therese Walter was represented in some of the etchings made for the book such as no.s 4,6 and 17. The book was eventually published in 1931. Only 145 copies were made. However, the same year, Skira asked Picasso to cancel the plates which he did in a considerate way and Skira produced another folio the same year with the cancelled plates in an edition of 100 copies, 90 copies printed on Rives wove, 10 copies printed on china, printed by Roger Lacouriere. The above etching is from the Skira 1931 edition of the cancelled plate on Rives wove paper. A facsimile of the book was made in a smaller format 280 x 220mm in 1973. Plate size 312 x 224mm Page size 324 x 257mm. Very Good./No Jacket. GBP 3400.00 [Appr.: EURO 3808.25 US$ 5664.4 | JP¥ 503875] Book number: 005963 Click here to order or inquire at Roe and Moore. | ||
