He worked first in Bergen op Zoom, then Delft, The Hague, Barbizon (1878-80; 1904) and Paris (1880-83), again in The Hague, then Renkum and finally in Haarlem, where he remained until his death. Image size 390x600mm, sheet size 560x800mm. Jack Coutu British 1924- Printmaker, watercolourist, sculptor and teacher, full name Raymond John Coutu, born and lived in Farnham, Surrey area. He studied at the local School of Art, 1947-51, sculpture; Royal College of Art, 1951-4, stained glass; and Central School of Art, 1951-5, where Merlyn Evans was a notable influence on Coutu’s printmaking. Coutu taught printmaking at Central School, 1957-65, then at Farnham, West Surrey College of Art and Design, 1965-85. His Career as a notable carver of netsuke began in 1968, and he became member of the American based Netsuke Kenkyukai Society. Was also a member of the RE and Printmakers Council. The Japanese influence on Coutu’s work was ‘due to a stay during my army career with the occupation forces’. Showed in group shows at RA, at Bradford Print Biennale and elsewhere. He had a two man show with Michael Rothenstein at Alecto gallery in 1965 and a solo exhibition at Graphic Arts Gallery, 1968.Arts Council, Victoria and Albert, King Gustave (Sweden), Museum of Fine Arts (Boston) and Bradford City Art Gallery (UK). 8/07.
