| STEVEN, WILLIAM Memoir of George Heriot; with the History of the Hospital, Founded By Him in Edinburgh; and an Account of the Heriot Foundation Schools Edinburgh, Bell and Bradfute. 1845, First Edition. Full-Leather, 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. George Heriot's presentation binding of mottled calf with school crest in gilt to front and rear covers (the crest is also found as a vignette on title page). Wear to top of spine and some bumping but still a handsome binding. 5 raised bands to spine, gilt rules on each spine. Contents are generally very good with a hint of darkening to page edge. Includes plates of the Heriot's Hospital and the Foundationer's Hospital in the Cowgate plus a coloured fold out map, all by W. & A. K. Johnston. xxii, 282, 166 pages (the last page is wrongly numbered 256). There are no examples of Heriot's work as a goldsmith surviving and it is difficult to see how he could have become the equivalent of a multi-millionaire without a workshop producing large pieces under the patronage of the aristocracy. It has therefore been argued that he was a banker, perhaps from one of the Antwerp banking houses, George Heriot being a corruption of something rather more Germanic. Very Good.
