Complete with dark basements, slimy pools, stolen art objects, and threatening kidnappers, the mystery unfolds skillfully and swiftly, aided by a breezy, humorous style. Henry's hero is Sam Spade, whom he imitates with a tough, macho swagger that, while often witty and tongue-in-cheek, is also frequently sexist. BURNETT, FRANCES HODGSON  Little Lord Fauntleroy
United States, 01 July 1990, Yearling, 1990. (ISBN: 044044764X) Paperback , 7.8 x 5.2 x 0.8 inches. Transformation and redemption of a curmudgeonly Earl comes through the innocence of a poor boy living in New York City during the late 1800's. Devoted to his American mother, who has never been recognized by her aristocratic British father-in-law, Cedric Fauntleroy is summoned to England to assume the mantle of future Lord of the manor. Beguiling all he meets with his selflessness and goodness, he becomes the vehicle for reconciliation between his mother and grandfather, while rekindling the true meaning of "noblesse oblige" in his lineage. Opening with a brief biography of Frances Hodgson Burnett gives a sense of history to this moralistic Victorian tale. Donada Peters offers an admirable narration of this lengthy production. Her diction is clear and crisp, and the reading is well-paced and sensitive to the characters' inflections, bringing mood and meaning through this technique. She portrays Mr. Hobbs, the grocer, using gruff, yet personable tones, and Mary, the Irish servant, with a musical, lilting brogue. Her strength lies with the traditional voices that have more story line dimensions, such as the Earl, Mr. Haversham, and Dick. The voices for "dearest" and Cedric, the main characters, are not as striking. She fails to give a solid American accent throughout, and oftentimes Cedric's voice becomes too saccharine in order to portray his innate "goodness." During some transitions, the voices of narrator and characters blend into one. At intervals, there are split second pauses, quite often at the end of sentences during the narration. This might reflect splicing or editing and are a constant distraction The use of music or sound effects to add vitality to this antiquated tale would have enhanced it for those who are not familiar with classic British stories. Very Good.

DOWER, LAURA  From the Files of Madison Finn #1: Only the Lonely
United States, May 2001, Hyperion Book CH, 2001. (ISBN: 0786815531) Paperback , 7.4 x 5 x 0.7 inches. From Publishers Weekly The chatty debut installment of the From the Files of Madison Finn series introduces a high-strung and contemplative heroine who pronounces herself "allergic" to change. The summer before seventh grade, Madison is still reeling from her parents' divorce a year earlier. With her two best pals, Aimee and Egg, away at camp, she feels bored and lonely not to mention anxious about the impending start of junior high. When she becomes friends with a new girl in her neighborhood, Madison worries about juggling this relationship with her tried-and-true friendships, then agonizes about whether she still has as much in common with Aimee and Egg as before. The novel's title refers to one of the files that Madison keeps on her beloved laptop, on which she records her feelings, fears and fixations. The computer also gives rise to e-mails and chat room dialogue, faithfully recorded here ("evry one is @ a party except 4 me"), which supplement the often long-winded narrative ("Madison went into her super-special computer files. She accessed the files with a specially selected, super-special password which was so super-special that even she forgot it sometimes"). The issues are real enough and credibly handled, so that readers who identify with Madison's angst may well want to reach for the series' second book, Boy, Oh Boy!, due out the same month. Ages 8-12. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc. From School Library Journal Gr 4-6-Fluffy reading loaded with computer messages is the gimmick here for wired girls. Madison Finn is "allergic to change," and this summer her life is fraught with "flux." Instead of hanging out with her best friends, she goes with her mom to Brazil to scout a location for a nature documentary. When they return home, the 12-year-old's pals are in camp and her parents are getting a divorce. Bored, lonely, and filled with angst at the thought of entering seventh grade, she searches chat rooms for new friends only to find one in her neighborhood. (Fortunately, Madison is savvy enough not to exchange intimate information.) Then Egg and Aimee return from camp, and the beginning of seventh grade is not what Madison expected. Her new friend Fiona makes the mistake of connecting with Maddie's archenemies at school. The first in a projected series, this novel has no heavy messages to weigh down a light summer read. Marilyn Payne Phillips, University City Public Library, MO Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc. Very Good.

DOYLE, BRIAN  Uncle Ronald
Groundwood Books, 1998. (ISBN: 0888993099) Paperback , 7 x 4.3 x 0.4 inches. Clean, tight. Writing and highlighting of text. Grade 6-8. At age 112, Mickey McGuire is Canada's oldest citizen, but he remembers with perfect clarity the events beginning in Ottawa in 1895. That year, without investigating the cause of his daily fainting spells, school authorities decide that 12-year-old Mickey should stay home. When his bed wetting begins, the boy's efforts to cure the problem ring with both hilarity and pathos. A larger concern is the frequent beatings he and his mother receive at the hands of his alcoholic father. Determined to spare her son further trauma, Mickey's mother sends him to stay on her family's farm run by her brother and twin sisters. Strong and tender, Uncle Ronald is wise in the ways of horses, geese, and men, and is the antithesis of the boy's brutal father. When Mickey's mother arrives after a particularly savage beating, she is sure that her husband will follow. Meanwhile, the entire rural area is also braced for violence. Armed federal troops have arrived to collect back taxes that no one can pay. Mickey's mother's cousins, the legendary O'Malley girls, are stalwart and shrewd in subverting their efforts. Doyle has a wonderful grasp of time and place. His unique storytelling voice weaves sound, sight, and disparate plot elements together into an unusual whole. With warmer, better-drawn characters and a more carefully couched theme than Doyle's Angel Square (Groundwood, 1996), this book will reward and amuse thoughtful readers. Acceptable.
