| FRENCH, NICCI Beneath the Skin. United Kingdom, 01 March 2001, Nicci French, 2001. (ISBN: 0141802618) Audio Cassette . Beneath the Skin is an absolutely chilling suspense story - three first-person accounts of women living in London who have the misfortune to catch the attention of a serial killer. First there's Zoe, the young nursery school teacher who catches a mugger and becomes front -page news. Then it's Jenny's turn. The former hand model is a brittle, lonely trophy wife with three young sons. Last comes Nadia, who makes a precarious living as a clown at children's parties. All three women receive ?love letters? from a man promising to kill them - letters the police are slow to take seriously. And, even when it becomes clear the threats are deadly serious, the killer remains elusive. With her life at stake, Nadia desperately unravels details of Zoe's and Jenny's lives, hoping to uncover connections that might identify the killer before he strikes again. This is the sort of book you'll read in one sitting (with all the lights on) and only put down long enough to make sure you've locked all the doors. Very Good. | KOONTZ, DEAN The Good Guy [Audiobook] [Unabridged] Random House Audio, 2007. (ISBN: 0739332929) Audio Cassette , 6.3 x 4 x 2.7 inches. Bestseller Koontz (The Husband) delivers a thriller so compelling many readers will race through the book in one sitting. In the Hitchcockian opening, which resembles that of the cult noir film Red Rock West (1992), Timothy Carrier, a quiet stone mason having a beer in a California bar, meets a stranger who mistakes him for a hit man. The stranger slips Tim a manila envelope containing $10,000 in cash and a photo of the intended victim, Linda Paquette, a writer in Laguna Beach, then leaves. A moment later, Krait, the real killer, shows up and assumes Tim is his client. Tim manages to distract Krait from immediately carrying out the hit by saying he's had a change of heart and offering Krait the $10,000 he just received. This ploy gives the stone mason enough time to warn Linda before they begin a frantic flight for their lives. While it may be a stretch that the first man wouldn't do a better job of confirming Tim's identity, the novel's breathless pacing, clever twists and adroit characterizations all add up to superior entertainment. | REITER, MARK What Got You Here WonT Get You There: How Successful People Become Even More Successful [Abridged] [Audiobook] United States, January 2007, Random House Audio, 2007. (ISBN: 0739342231) Audio CD , 6.3 x 5.3 x 1 inches. New. Still shrink-wrapped. Goldsmith, an executive coach to the corporate elite, pinpoints 20 bad habits that stifle already successful careers as well as personal goals like succeeding in marriage or as a parent. Most are common behavioral problems, such as speaking when angry, which even the author is prone to do when dealing with a teenage daughter's belly ring. Though Goldsmith deals with touchy-feely material more typical of a self-help book--such as learning to listen or letting go of the past--his approach to curing self-destructive behavior is much harder-edged. For instance, he does not suggest sensitivity training for those prone to voicing morale-deflating sarcasm. His advice is to stop doing it. To stimulate behavior change, he suggests imposing fines (e.g. $10 for each infraction), asserting that monetary penalties can yield results by lunchtime. While Goldsmith's advice applies to everyone, the highly successful audience he targets may be the least likely to seek out his book without a direct order from someone higher up. As he points out, they are apt to attribute their success to their bad behavior. Still, that may allow the less successful to gain ground by improving their people skills first. New.
