SAGAR-FENTON, MICHAEL  The Rosebud and the Newlyn Clearances - Signed Copy
Truro, Cornwall, Truran. 2003, First Edition. (ISBN: 1850221839) Paperback. PB, 96 pages, in Fine condition. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. "Armada of One to Invade London" proclaimed the Sunday Graphic in the Autumn of 1937. The story of Rosebud caught the nation's imagination and her voyage was the culmination of a battle to save the fishing village of Newlyn from wanton destruction. Most of its old cottages and courts found themselves as 'slums' by Penzance Borough Council who proposed to replace them with modern blocks of flats. The protesters hit on the inspired and romantic idea of sending their petition for the survival of their village directly to the Houses of Parliament on board a Newlyn fishing boat, the Rosebud. The image of the brave little vessel on the Thames approaching the Palace of Westminster filled the newspapers and film newsreels, and became an icon to those struggling to preserve the best of the past before it was swept away. This is the first time that this story is fully told. Fine.
