He also edited, but never published, some of Chandler's works. None of the sermons can be said to be truly rare, but they are uncommon: ESTC locates 15 of the first item; 10 (3 only in North America) of the second; 14 (3 in North America) of the third; and 19 of Chandler's sermon. | GILPIN (WILLIAM). Sermons preached to a Country Congregation. To which are added a few Hints for Sermons; Intended Chiefly for the Use of the Younger Clergy. Second Edition. London: Printed by Luke Hansard..., for T. Cadell and W. Davies..., 1800. 8vo, 218 x 136 mms., pp. [vii], viii - xii [xii - xvi Contents], 438 [439 blank, 440 adverts], contemporary speckled calf, gilt spine (rubbed), black morocco label; front joint cracked and tender, rear joint cracked but firm, top of spine slightly chipped. Inscribed on the top margin of the front paste-down end-paper, "Present from my Father/ May 19th 1800." and beneath that the contemporary autograph "Elizabeth Susannah Hansard." Luke Hansard (1752 - 1828), the printer of this volume and father of Elizabeth Susannah Hansard, was the printer to the House of Commons and was responsible for printing the proceedings of the House (but not the voting or the agenda papers). His printing firm was the largest in London. He was a devout Christian, so the presentation of this to his daughter in 1800 probably testifies to his concern for her spiritual welfare. Gilpin (1724 - 1804) is better known as a writer on art and a headmaster than in his role as Vicar of Boldre; but much of his early career was in the church. The sermons were first published in Lymington in 1799, followed by a second volume in 1800. This second edition of 1800 was one of many reprints, including another "second edition" in 1806 as well as a "fourth edition" in 1806. ESTC T194677 locates copies in the Bodleian and the National Library of Ireland; the Huntington; and University of Witwatersrand Library. FIRST EDITION. 2 volumes. 8vo, pp. viii, 470 [471 adverts, 472 blank]; iv, 504, including list of subscribers in volume 2, contemporary calf, cloth reback; abused by repairs with adhesive tape to inner margin of title-page volume 1, other crude repairs to other hinges, ex-library (Rev. James Robert's bookplate, donor of volumes to Library of the Allegheny Theological Seminary), "discarded," with library pocket at end of both volumes and "Date Due" stuck over adverts on p. 504 of second volume, library stamps and cancellations on title-pages, a copy likely to inspire homicidal thoughts among bibliophiles, despite the pacific nature of the contents. Jamieson (1759 - 1838) was minister in Forfar, Scotland, and distinguished himself with a poem published in 1789, The Sorrows of Slavery. ESTC T115851 locates copies in L, E, Oman; DLC, MH-AH, OSW, PPiPT (this copy, "discarded"), TxDaM-P. | ROCHESTER. (PARSONS (THOMAS [SIC, FOR ROBERT]): A Sermon Preach'd at the Funeral Of the Right Honourable John Earl of Rochester, who Died at Woodstock-Park, July 26. 1680. and was Buried at Spilsbury in Oxfordshire, Aug. 9. By Thomas [sic] Parsons, M. A. Chaplain to the Right Honourable Anne Countes London: Printed for Richard Baldwin..., n. d., [1765]. 8vo (in 4s), pp. 31 [32 adverts], disbound; title-page almost detached at inner margin. Parsons' sermon was first published in 1680 and frequently reprinted. Here the title-page adds a long homily above the imprint about the publication of Rochester's poems. ESTC T87649 locates copies at L, C, and O, but notes, probably inaccurately, "The author's name is given incorrectly on the titlepage; by Robert Parsons, Rector of Oddington." Robert Parsons is, of course, correct, but he is not described in this copy as "Rector of Oddington."
