A Londres, Chez J. Nourse 1754. 8vo, pp. xxiii [xxiv "Avis de l'Imprimeur"], 248, contemporary Dutch marbled boards, morocco label (chipped): no blank leaves before title-page or after last page of text, ex-library with faded library stamp on title-page. Arbuthnot (1667 - 1735) published the five pamphlets which comprise this work separately in 1712, and as The History of John Bull in 1712, and as Law is a Bottomless Pit in 1727; it was also included the Pope-Swift Miscellanies. The imprint here looks suspiciously false, lacking the press figures often found in English printings of this period; and the signatures are distinctively continental. This translation is by the Abbé Paul Francois Velly and first appeared in 1753. ESTC distinguishes between two issues, an 8vo (as above), N38661 (14 copies); and a 12mo, T147436 ("Printed for J. Nours" [sic] in 1753; 13 copies). GBP 275.00 [Appr.: EURO 305 US$ 456.78 | JP¥ 40354] Book number: 3378 Click here to order or inquire at John Price Antiquarian Books. | ||

| [HAYLEY (WILLIAM)]: Essai Satirique et Amusant sur les Vielles Filles. Traduit de l'Anglois par M. Sibille. A Paris, Chez Le Tellier..., 1788. FIRST FRENCH TRANSLATION. 2 parts in 1. 12mo, pp. xvi, 172; [4], 224 [225 - 226 contents, 227 - 228 Approbation], contemporary French tree sheepskin; gilt spine missing about half its leather, joints cracked and tender. Hayley's Philosophical, Historical, and Moral Essay on Old Maids was first published in three volumes in 1785. This is translation of volume 1, and of chapter 1 of volume 2, only. S. libraries were those of Harvard and UCLA. GBP 165.00 [Appr.: EURO 183 US$ 274.07 | JP¥ 24213] Book number: 5134 Click here to order or inquire at John Price Antiquarian Books. | ||

| NORTH-COUNTRY GENTLEMAN (A): A Panegyric on the Town of Paisley. By a North-Country Gentleman. [?Paisley] Printed in the Year MDCCLXV 1765. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 8vo (in 4s), pp. 24, including half-title, late 19th century quarter red calf, gilt spine; half-title soiled with two small holes and mounted, some slight fingering of text, but a good copy. A humorous poem addressed by the poet to a lady resident of Paisley at whose house he had stayed. "This satirical fiction contains a compliment; as Mercury is the God of Trade, their obtaining his rod, signifies the dexterity of their manufactures; and his wings, the extensiveness of their commerce, both being then very flourishing." ESTC on-line suggests Paisley as the place of printing which, if correct, puts this piece four years earlier than first confirmed Paisley imprint.
