Tall 8vo, pp. 159 [160 blank], 22 folding engraved plates, contemporary half calf, marbled boards (rubbed); occasional foxing of text and plates, front joint cracked and tender, rear joint very slightly cracked, top and base of spine chipped. With the contemporary autograph "George Stark/ Piscataguog (?) Villa/ Bedford N. H." on the recto of the front free end-paper. Davies' work was first published in 1832. He was Professor of Mathematics at West Point Military Academy. When the first edition was published, the reviewer in The New England Magazine for May 1832, observed, "No man should presume to criticise even a painting or engraving unless he has studied perspective.... Mr. Davies's book...is the best of its kind, yet published, and the demonstrations are as plain and concise, almost, as the subject will admit." The theologian and mathematician William Ludlam (1717 - 1788) achieved some distinction with his skills in mathematics, astronomy, and practical mechanics. The two essays on ultimate ratios and the power of the wedge were first published in 1770, and that on Newton's second law of motion in 1780. An essay on the properties of the cycloid and on one of the propositions in Newton's Principia are new to this edition.
