Sherlock (1639/40–1707) first published this work in 1689, and at least another 17 editions were published before the end of the 18th century, making it one of the most popular religious books of the long 18th century. Ward, 1715 8vo, pp. [x], 308, engraved portrait of Sherlock as frontispiece, late 18th century tree sheepskin, rebacked with old ornately gilt spine and red morocco label laid down; base of spine a little chipped, but an attractive copy, from the Easton Neston Library, with library label for shelf mark and the armorial bookplate of Sir Thomas Hesketh, Bart. on the front paste-down end-paper. ESTC T79789 lists a "seventh edition" of 1713, followed by an "eighth edition" of 1717. OCLC 5104787 locates a "16th edition" of 1715, as well as a "16th edition" of 1714 (OCLC 84812746). It is not clear from either OCLC or ESTC when the portrait of Sherlock was added as a frontispiece. This "edition" appears to be unrecorded.
