"The first decades of the 18th century are marked by two outstanding lexicographical works, Christian Ludwig's A Dictionary English, German and French, published in 1706, and his Teutsch-Englisches Lexicon, published in 1716. Though the former includes French as well, it has to be regarded as the first English-German Dictionary..." (Gabriele Stein. Although the two dictionaries were published ten years apart, they are usually considered to be one work; catalogued in order of appearance in volume, with the later volume coming first. | POLITE LITERATURE. The Gentleman and Lady's Key to Polite Literature: or A Compendious Dictionary of Fabulous History, Containing the Characters, and principal Actions, ascribed to the Heathen Gods, Goddesses, Heroes, &c and the manner in which the Ancients represented the London, Printed for T. Carnan..., 1788. 12mo (in 6s), 140 x 88 mms., unpaginated, pp. [256], engraved title-page and engraved frontispiece, contemporary sheepskin, morocco label; lacks any blank leaves at end, short tear in fore-margin of frontispiece but not into plate area, binding a little rubbed and worn. With a presentation bookplate on the front paste-down end-paper, "John R. McC/ to Jack N. McC" and dated 1913. The anonymous compilers speak of themselves in the plural, and the emphasis is on mythology and fable. The publisher, Carnan, was also the publisher in 1775 of one of the earliest editions of Goody Two-Shoes; this work was first published by Newbery in 1760. Roscoe J145(6). ESTC distinguishes between two issues, this one N7923 (copies in National Trust, University of Bristol; UCLA; Victoria); and another with a slightly different registration on the last leaf, T95395 (BL, Bodleian (2); Stony Brook).
