[Manuscript] 3 November 1828. Patrick Fraser Tytler (1791- 1841) was the son of Alexander Fraser Tytler, Lord Woodhouselee, Lord Kames's biographer.

London: Printed by Strahan and Preston..., 1809. 12mo, pp. [iv], 180, including half-title, engraved frontispiece by Grignion after Wale, contemporary tree calf, spine gilt to an anchor motif, morocco label, armorial bookplate of Emanuel Goodhart on the front paste-down end-paper; very slight wear to front joint, but generally a very good to fine copy. The Marine Society was formed from the bequest of a Mr.Hicks, a merchant of Hamburg, to help orphans or children of the poor and destitute to embark on a career at sea. Initially, the Society worked only with boys, but in the first decade of the 19th century, girls were also found places in the Royal Navy. In times of peace, the children were trained for posts or jobs with merchants' ships. Jonas Hanway's 1775 address to the public about the Marine Society is reprinted here. Four editions were published in the 18th century; this was the first edition to be published in the 19th century.
