| XENOPHON. The Science of Good Husbandry: Or, The Oeconomics of Xenophon. Shewing The Method of Ruling and Ordering a Family, and of Managing a Farm to the best Advantage. Translated from the Greek by R. Bradley.... London: Printed for Tho. Corbet..., 1727. FIRST EDITION of this translation. 8vo, pp. [xii], 131 [132 blank], including half-title, contemporary worn calf; 15 mms of top margin of half-tile and title cut away (presumably to remove name), margin of spine very crudely repaired with tape, extending about 50 mms. onto each board. Although Bradley (c. 1688 - 1732) was a Fellow of the Royal Society and Professor of Botany at Cambridge when this work was published, he seems to have colluded in something of a fraud, as he was entirely ignorant of Greek and Latin and was unlikely to have been the translator of the work. In the Preface Bradley suggests that this is the first English translation of Xenophon's Oeconomicus; in fact, it was first translated into English in 1632 by Gentian Hervet and was reprinted several times in the 16th century. Goldsmiths 6511. GBP 165.00 [Appr.: EURO 183 US$ 274.07 | JP¥ 24213] Book number: 4957 Click here to order or inquire at John Price Antiquarian Books. |
