| MONTGAILLARD (JEAN GABRIEL MAURICE ROCQUES DE), COMTE: Mémoire Concernant la Trahison de Pichegru, dans les Années 3,4 et 5 Rédigé en l'an 6 par M. R. de Montgaillard, Et dont l'Original se trouve aux Archives du Gouvernement A Paris, de l'Imprimerie de la République Germinal an XII. [1804] FIRST EDITION. 8vo, pp. 159 [160 blank], interleaved copy with at least on blank leaf between each printed leaf and occasionally three or four leaves, 8 blank leaves before title-page, and ten blank leaves at end, contemporary half maroon sheepskin, gilt spine, marbled boards. With the bookplate of William Wickham (1761 - 1840) on the front paste-down end-paper. Wickham's ownership of this item makes for a nice association. As the government's chief spy on the continent in the 1790s, he was privy to a number of transactions in revolutionary France. This note appears on the first blank leaf in a contemporary hand: "For [a] Character of Montgaillard see W. Wickham's dispatch (no 111) to Lord Greville 28 Decr 1796. W. W's refusal to se M[ontgaillard] se W. Ws letter to Gen'l de la Toru 14 Jany. 1797. Refer to Pg. 3 for W. Wickham's pencil note, 'Je ne me jam ais demande de l'argent.'" The reference to "Pg. 3" may be to another item, as there is no pencil note on page 3 here, but Montgaillard mentions Wickham on numerous pages, and a letter from Wickham, using his nom de guerre of Bluet, is quoted on pp. 138 - 139. Montgaillard (1761 - 1841), an author and French political agent, was employed by Louis XVIII. to secure Austrian intervention on behalf of Mme Royale (afterwards duchess of Angoulme), still a prisoner in the Temple, and he drew up the proposition made by the prince to Charles Pichegru.
