| PROUTY, OLIVE HIGGINS. Now, Voyager. Boston. Houghton Mifflin. 1941. First Edition. With matching dates of 1941 on the title and copyright pages. Published by the Riverside Press in Cambridge, MA. A very scarce item autographed: Signed Presentation copyÐÐ "With my best wishesÐÐOlive Higgins Prouty (underscored) October 12th 1941." Inscribed in ink on the free front endpaper. With a personal bookplate affixed to the front paste-down. This novel was the basis for the classic Bette Davis movie, scripted by Casey Robinson and starring Paul Henreid and Claude Rains. An attractively bound copy in clean woven dark green cloth stamped brightly in gold on the front boards and on the spine where the gilt has faded. There are some mischievous and extensive pencil scribblings upon the half-title page (most scribblings here have been erased but the impressions resemble a polygraph test), as well as the rear endpaper and rear paste-down where there are numerous concentric pencil markings. The child also scribbled on the three paragraphs on p. 15. The markings are somewhat erasable but not ineradicable. In a heavily chipped dustjacket with the original price of $2.50 at the top of the inside front flap. There are several small fingernail-sized chips to the top and bottom of the spine and a 1.5" x 1/8" strip missing at the center top of the front panel.With "Mrs. Prouty's "Stella Dallas" write up and bullet points on the rear panel.
