ALGER, HORATIO. HORATIO ALGER, JR.  Tattered Tom; or, The Story of a Street Arab.
Boston. Loring, Publisher. 1871. First Edition with 1871 Copyright Date by A.K. Loring on the copyright page. This is #162 in Bennett's bibliography of Alger. From the Preface: "When, three years since, the author published "Ragged Dick," he was far from anticipating the flattering welcome it would receive, or the degree of interest which would be excited by his pictures of street life in New York... "Tattered Tom" is threfore presented to the public as the initial volume of a new series of six stories, which may be regarded as a continuation of the "Ragged Dick Series." Some surprise may be felt at the discovery that Tom is a girl; but I beg to assure my readers that she is not one of the conventional kind. ...New York, April, 1871." A good copy in woven rose-colored boards which are blindstamped with an attractive design along the borders and edgeworn and lightly frayed. The spine is faded to a light brown and is stamped with faded gold lettering and designs. The rear hinge is tight; the front hinge is torn. With a name in ink at the top of the front endpaper and a slight spine slant. A scarce first edition of the first book in the Tattered Tom series, which features a girl.
