Covering Feb 26th 1858 performances. Being the benefit appearance of both Charles Mathews and the second Mrs Mathews (The first having been Eliza Vestris). All three plays written by Matthews, two comedies and a farce. In 1856 Mme Vestris died, and in the following year Mathews again visited the United States, where in 1858 he married Mrs. A.H. Davenport. Together, they acted both in America and in London. | SIDDONS HENRY.: Time's a Tell Tale. (Theatre Playbill). London ,Theatre Royal . 1809. Playbill 7.5ins.x 11.5 ins. Black letter playbill for The comedy, Time's a Tell Tale and featuring the author Henry Siddons and his wife Mrs Siddons (1755-1831) . Plus a full cast including Dowton, Terry & Mrs Turpin. In Act 2 a Naval fete ,dances by the four Misses Adams and after which the farce VILLAGE LAWYER again featuring Dowton ,Simmons and a full cast. Plus ,at the bottom the list of future plays . Mrs. Siddons, the sister of John Kemble, the actor was a force on the English stage in her own right, "and probably the one great tragedy queen that Britain ever produced. She first attracted attention in the part of Belvidera in Otway's `Venice Preserv'd', and was subsequently famous in her impersonation of Lady Macbeth and other Shakespearean characters." from: Oxford Companion to English Lit. Siddons comedy was first performed at Drury Lane on 27 October, 1807. For the Comic Opera, The Maid of the Mill with Bannister, Dibdin, Fawcett, Miss Pope and a young Gentleman (being his first appearance) and playing Aimsworth and in ink named as Davis. Bickerstaff's notable comic opera first played in 1765 . Following was a dramatic entertainment entitled A Trip to Scotland and featuring the minor cast members. Hand dated 24th September 1770. Bowers( 1830-95) and called the first actress of the Age, as Camille and Mr Charles Barron as Armand Duval.Saturday Testimonial East Lynne starring both Bowers & Barron and also Miss Carrie Augusta Moore will show her proficiency on parlor skates and Mr & Mrs Gomersall will perform a variety of songs, duets and dances. At 7.34 in the evening Mrs Bowers appears in The Four Sisters, and amongst other highlights Miss Moore will repeat her skating and the celebrated Morris Bros., Pell & Trowbridge Minstrels will perform. Love in A Village by Thomas Arne performed for the first time following extensive improvements to the building and with Young Meadows being played by Mr. Pyne( probably James K.1785-1857), Hawthorn played by J. Smith and Rosetta Miss H. Kelly direct from the Theatre Royal Portsmouth and with Mrs Bland and Mr Chatterley.Also A New Musical Farce in two Acts by Mr. C. Smith entitled ANYTHING NEW. The composer/ tenor singer Charles Smith( 1786-1856). He sang as a soprano at Ranelagh until his voice broke and then switched to bass. With a further note that Edwin Booth will appear Monday in what may have been close to the time of the assassination of Lincoln by his brother. A comedy called the Wonder, plus a favourite hornpipe from the ballet the Corsair by Mrs Foster, followed by an address by Master Benwell and the celebrated Battle Song sung by Mr Benwell and finally the farce The Mayor of Garratt. The performance under the patronage of Colonel Sproule and the Officers of the Royal Artillery and for the benefit of Mr Firth, Treasurer( it should be remembered that this play took place during the Napoleonic Wars. size 7 ½ x 6 inches.
