| D'ALBERT CHARLES.: Faust Valse a Deux Temps. London, Chappell & Co. 1850/1. With a monochrome cover of the two main leads most probably by John Brandard. Jules Barbier constructed the libretto for Gounod's Faust from excerpts which he lifted, with the author's permission, from Michel Carré's play Faust et Marguerite (1850). Carré gave Barbier carte blanche to borrow from his play; he himself was busy writing the libretto for Meyebeer's Le Padron de Ploërmel (Dinorah), and had no interest in adapting the play for operatic treatment.Charles Gounod's opera had its opening night at the Theatre Lyrique in Paris on March 19 1859. This then relates to the Carre Play Faust et Marguerite and the earlier Goethe work when Faust fell in love with Margarete (Marguerite), her seduction and downfall .Originally published by Brandus of Paris.Charles Louis D'Albert(1809-86) was the son of a French cavalry captain and was the major dance instructor in the middle years in British society. The plate number is 8466 and the last Chappell number in Neighbour & Tyson is 8455 for November 1850 and so 1850/1 is very reasonable estimate of the publishing date. Folio size with music.
